Issues & Problems

Flaky AOL / Shoutcast servers

If you are using the ShoutCast directory service, you may find us listed one minute and not the next.

Why?

Simple, it is down to the flaky servers that AOL host and the NAK (100) or touch issues that has plagued them for the last 3 years (see their forum). This is why we have direct links here on this FTA Show distribution Blog to the ShoutCast servers hosted by Jon and his team on his jsat.tv web site in Thailand so you can listen when you want and not rely on the ShoutCast directory Service.

Thanks to Anne for having this on a showroom stream in their office (you hear it in their satellite TV showroom)

    We have been running tests with server2 to shoutcast, and currently running on port 15050 and still the same NAK & Extended error (100) issues.

    This is most frustrating trying to keep the Shoutcast Directory Service updated .

  2. theftashow says:

    Having said this it seems it is up more on the SDS than Server 1 on port 8000 so we may move server 1 later and test that on a higher port and update the FTA Show forum with the new links.

  3. theftashow says:

    So all the servers are running on higher ports, but still the NAK and error 100 issues persist. So will leave them there as there are less errors than the lower 8080 ports.

    Tested from remote and it works great even on the mobile phone here on the Eastern Seaboard in Thailand.

    So I have put one of the shoutcast servers on listen2myradio.com’s server list to see if we can keep the shoutcast directory service updated 24×7 (this is a test only but seems to be working OK)

    There links to the show are;

    We have 2 demo IceCAST servers online this morning. Amazing! they published the FTA Show within a few minutes. It looks like IceCAST blows ShoutCAST out of the water.

    The demo servers (this is running on a development box here, so if it is stable we will move it to its own dedicated server later this week) are at;

    1. IceCast – http://dir.xiph.org/search?search=fta+
    2. OpenRadioDirectory – http://openradiodirectory.org/

  6. theftashow says:

    Icecast is bomb proof, but man this shoutcast is enough to drive you to drink. So now we are trying the linux servers to see if these work any better than the windows ones.

  7. theftashow says:

    So the 2 demo icecast servers have been taken down, it seems they work as the should but not what I wanted to use.

    I now have confirmation the extended Error (100) is an internal AOL/Shoutcast error not a broadcaster error (phew, so it is not me).

    But having said that an error is an error and it all of the listeners who suffer.

    Also good luck to the 1,400 AOL staff being laid off today.

  8. theftashow says:

    The good news is the linux servers we are now using, seem to have us up 95% of the lime in the ShoutCast Yellow Pages (their directory service – SC YP) which means we are also up in VLC and many other apps that rely on the SC YP to be updated.

    Happy days from from the FTA Show’s distribution team.

    RE: Message 4 above – we have taken all those links off the air as we now have the FTA Show in just about everything via our media rich rss feeds on;

    1. http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheFtaShowsDistributionBlog
    2. http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheFtaShowsDistributionBlog?format=xml

  10. theftashow says:

    OK some successes on the other distribution here;

    Some stats on where the show is being seen / used at the moment

  11. Jon says:

    An apology to all our shoutcast users ….. as we are updating themediacrypt.com servers with over 2 terrabytes of content and this has effected the bandwidth of our shoutcast servers (2 of them) so we have shut them down until all the PD content has been updated.

    If you want them back simply email Richard and ask him and we will dig up some more servers/bandwidth to pop them on for you.
